Fears rise over Apple’s multi-touch patent

June 23rd, 2011 Comments off

Basically it would mean that if your software used a one finger to scroll and another to pinch or zoom on certain details within that page or element, you will owe Apple some cash. There is some alarm around after the US Patent and Trademark Office decided to award a patent for a multitouch user interface to Apple. The worry is that the patent is so broad that you could land a 747 sideways on it and could be used by Jobs’ Mob to stop its smartphone market share being wiped out by Android. It warns that Apple will use the patent to bully Android rivals and it is predicting a huge number of patent litigation against Research in Motion, HTC, Samsung, Motorola,Nokia and ” Uncle Joe Cobbly ‘n all” The patent seems broad enough to cover any mobile device with an interface that incorporates the finger movements so that means all tablet manufacturers may have to write a cheque to Apple.

To create awareness of state and local hands-free communication laws, Motorola Mobility is offering a reward for responsible motorists

Motorola during the month of June to pledge to be “Responsible on the Road” by using hands-free technology if they need to communicate while driving. Android™ can access Motorola’s Smart Handsfree app, which uses location technology to discern a user’s state and display an overview of cell phone and texting laws. The Illinois State Police (ISP) welcomes the opportunity to work with Motorola Mobility in its Responsibility on the Road program to promote responsible driving. This initiative engages the motoring public in a positive way by allowing the ISP to educate drivers about hands-free laws in the state of Illinois,” said ISP director Hiram Grau.Starting this week, in support of National Safe Driving Month, Motorola Mobility, Inc. To underscore the importance of responsible driving and reinforce local or state laws that restrict or ban the use of hand-held devices while driving, Motorola Responsibility on the Road giveaways will take place in the following areas: Chicagoland, Champaign, Collinsville, Peoria, Rock Island and Springfield.Motorists across the country are invited to visit Facebook. Discontinue use of the device if you can’t concentrate on driving. Motorola Mobility will also provide online resources to educate drivers on new and existing hands-free legislation.
